When it comes to Towbar electrics you have serveral choices depending upon what you want to use your new towbar for.

​7 PIN (12N) SOCKET

​

​​This is probably the most commanly fitted socket in the UK. It is usually 'Black' in colour with 7 pins inside. This socket is used for the vehicle road lights - Indicators, Stop, Tail,Fog, with a common earth, but NO Reverse light.

7 PIN (12S) SOCKET

This socket is used in conjuction with a 7 Pin 12N socket when towing a caravan and some trailer tents. Usually 'Grey' in colour with 7 pins inside., which are used to run the fridge while towing, charging the battery inside the caravan, and the reverse light. It also has a constant 12 volt feed which is used to operate the internal lights on older caravans.

13 PIN SOCKET

 

 

This socket combines both functions from the 7 pin 12N & 12S sockets in to one socket. It most commanly fitted when using a vehicle specific wiring kits, and will become more popular since the new type approval rules came into effect in October 2012 for new trailers with regards to the lighting regulations.
